  • Brushing Back And Forth: Taking your toothbrush back an forth along your teeth doesn’t effectively clean the surface area and it can cause you to push harder, doing damage to your enamel.   • Skipping The Gum Line: Forgetting to brush near your gum line can cause a build up of plaque and bacteria in the gum tissue which can lead to dental diseases like gingivitis. Healthy teeth require a layer of enamel to protect the crown of your teeth (the crown is the part that sits above the gum line). Below the gum line is a layer called the Cementum, this protects your roots. Beneath those layers is another layer called Dentin, which is filled with many small and hollow tubes. When the Dentin is exposed to hot and cold foods like coffee and ice cream can affect the root causing you pain.

There are several ways to treat sensitive teeth:

  • Desensitizing toothpaste. The product will dull the sensitivity of the nerve.
  • Fluoride gel. Fluoride Gel is applied in office and helps to strengthen tooth enamel.
  • A crown, inlay or bonding. These can be used to correct flaws with the teeth.
  • Surgical gum graft. An extreme measure but this can help replace lost gum tissue.
  • Root canal. Your dentist may recommend this option if nothing else seems to be working.

Edmond Dentist Asks; Are You Flossing Properly?

Let’s be honest, flossing properly is actually a bit more tricky than you’d think. Are you doing it properly? Many people wonder whether they are flossing correctly, often enough, and with the correct flossing instrument. If you’re tired of feeling ashamed and getting lectured by your dental hygienist at every dental appointment, this post is for you! It may seem like a daunting task to get your hands all the way in the back or to apply a proper technique, but with some help you may be able to pull it off. Edmond Dentist Tip # 1: Grab about 18-24 inches of floss. This is how much is recommended by the ADA. Put the ends around your index and middle fingers.

Gently “wrap” your tooth with the floss in a “c” shape. Use an up and down and back and forth (or zig-zag) motion to get all those surfaces.
